Chicago Wedding Photographer Blog of Sarah Postma Photography bio picture
  • Hello there! I’m Chicago wedding photographer Sarah Postma. And this is my blog.

I have a simple philosophy: to make photographs that are interesting, meaningful and real.

I enjoy movies with happy endings, fresh-brewed coffee, and live jazz. I love to travel, and I love city lights almost as much as I love mountains.

After living most my life in Michigan, Washington, and New Jersey (just outside of NYC), I now reside in Chicago. I'm currently accepting wedding commissions throughout the United States and other destinations.

I would love to meet you, hear all about the details of your wedding, and have the opportunity to capture the important moments in your life.

Take a peek at some of my latest wedding photography or e-mail me anytime at sarah@sarahpostma.com

I post here at least once a week, so subscribe via rss and come back often!

    All my best,
    Sarah

Kristen + Mike | A Chicago Engagement Session

undefined

I’m blogging this super sweet engagement session in the midst of a snowstorm! But just over a week ago, there were clear skies and the temp was 55 degrees, so Kristen and Mike and I took advantage. I really like these two. They’re a ton of fun to be around and they have a super cute dog – Daisy – named after Half Acre‘s popular pale ale, Daisy Cutter. We started out their session at Oak Street Beach, where I am always amazed how Chicago’s skyline converges with white sand and the lake. Then, we headed down the street to their favorite local watering hole to grab a pint of Daisy Cutter – because, hey, the best engagement sessions end with a pint of craft beer!

Lisa + Alex | A New Jersey Wedding

undefined

Personalized, emotional, wedding perfection – that’s how I like to describe Lisa and Alex’s late fall wedding. At every turn, I found the most heartfelt details – that Lisa had spent months imagining – come to life. From the cap-sleeved embroidered gown that seemed to be made only for her (but was actually a vintage consignment find!) to the couple’s intensely personalized vows, I felt truly honored to be capturing their day in photos. And I haven’t even mentioned the inspirational love quotes printed on the candles at the reception, the adorable vintage-styled bird cake topper, an emotional dance shared by Alex and his grandmother, or the choreographed salsa dance that the couple performed as a surprise to their guests! This wedding will stand as a forever-favorite of mine, held up by a solid foundation of intimate real moments mixed with pure prettiness.

My favorite image of the day – Lisa’s new grandmother-in-law’s reaction to seeing her in her dress!

Ellie + Jack | A Chicago Engagement Session

undefined

Ellie and Jack are a gorgeous Chicago couple who are getting married next summer. On a recent afternoon, when the last few bits of fall color overlapped with the twinkling lights of holiday decor, we strolled through downtown Chicago for their engagement session. I just love their calm, cool demeanor and their comfort level with each other in front of the camera! Not to mention the combination of Ellie’s stylish winter boots, pink Burberry scarf, and Jack’s effortless smiles that just show his admiration for her so, so well.

Sarah + Nate | A Chicago Yacht Club Wedding

undefined

Everything about Sarah and Nate’s downtown Chicago wedding was modern and bright. The fuchsia and orange color palette absolutely glowed from the invitations, designed by the bride’s sister Erin German, to the bouquets. Sarah wore a dreamy champagne mermaid-cut gown perfected with a cathedral length veil, which she adored (and I did too!). The bridesmaids bouquets featured fuchsia roses and orange tulips accented with green spider mums. I simply couldn’t get enough when I was photographing all of the modern details at this wedding! Sarah and Nate are truly happy together. Their laughter and joy was evident in every image, and they made my job a true delight from their engagement session all the way to their oh-so-fun reception – such a great party!

Katlyn + Mitch | An Illinois Wedding

undefined

Oh, this wedding! With so many happy moments, I had a smile on my face the entire day. Katlyn and Mitch were so excited to get married! And as soon as they had finished their vows, I got to capture moments like the one above on one of autumn’s most perfect days. They also had incredible golden light for their portraits before the reception – all because of Katlyn’s careful planning to account for the early November sunset. Congratulations, Katlyn and Mitch!

undefinedundefinedundefinedundefinedundefined

I just adore the ‘we’re married!’ moments immediately following the ceremony if a couple is able to sneak away while their guests exit the church. SO worth it for real moments like these, below!

Katie + John | Lincoln Park Chicago Engagement Session

Chicago-engagement-pictures

When our busy schedules found us meeting up for their engagement session on a rainy day, Katie and John were remarkably cheery. I’m so glad they brought their positive attitudes. And some rain boots. And an umbrella. Before they got too wet in the rain, we headed over to the Lincoln Park Conservatory for a few shots among the lush greenery, and warmed up with some coffee at the Bourgeois Pig Cafe. I’m so excited to be photographing their wedding next June in New Jersey! And I’m so glad they were willing to be the proof that engagement sessions (and weddings!) can be beautiful in the rain.
