February snow showers … bring spring wedding flowers?

Well, that might not be the most interesting rhyme ever created, but after the second big NYC snowstorm this year, I’m itching to see some spring.  I took a look through my archives and decided to bring out some wedding flowers from last year’s spring weddings to push the season along.

Perhaps you need some final inspiration for your wedding bouquet this year, or you’re just a guy or gal who loves flowers (like me!).  Either way, I hope you find something here that you love!

You gotta love the bright color of these gerbera daisy centerpieces from Annie & Bryan’s April wedding at Battery Gardens in New York City.  Not to mention the way-cool vintage New York postcards.  These replaced table numbers, and this table had a Chrysler Building theme. I love it!

Vintage New York Postcard

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again.  I think the peony is my favorite wedding flower.  They smell like heaven!  This peony bouquet from Kristen and Brad’s May wedding at Il Villaggio in Carlstadt, NJ, had varying shades of pink which complemented every aspect of the wedding.

Kristen’s bridesmaids also carried varying shades of pink in their delicate rose bouquets, all done by Stem & Co. at Smith’s Flowers in Montclair, NJ.

Pink peonies made another appearance at this May wedding at The View on the Hudson in Piermont, NY, with the addition of miniature roses, white gerbera daisies and delicate green and rose fill flowers.  I loved the vintage look of this bouquet!

Clean, fresh, white peonies were absolutely perfect for Yaeko and Eric’s May wedding at the Linden Terrace and New Leaf Cafe in Fort Tryon Park in Manhattan.

By the way, peonies are typically in season April-June, so florists have an easier time finding them, and you save a little by purchasing an in-season flower for your spring wedding!  Yaeko’s bouquets were done by Opalia Flowers in Brooklyn, NY.

Yaeko’s bridesmaids wore these fragrant gardenias in their hair, which I loved!

And her bridesmaids carried incredibly sweet bouquets made predominantly of white roses and muscari (grape hyacinth).

At Amanda and John’s May wedding at Valenzano Winery in Shamong, NJ, Amanda carried an amazing array of white and pink roses, with accents of purple chamelaucium (also known as wax flower), and red hypericum berries.  There was also a hint of paper-white hydrangeas along the base of the bouquet.  Gorgeous!

Centerpieces at Amanda’s wedding continued the beautiful mix of colors with purple daisies, white and pink roses, varying hydrangeas, purple chamelaucium, and pink Peruvian lilies.

Later, at this May wedding, a delicate pink peony surrounded by white anemone flowers made for a perfect cake topper.  Anemones are really becoming popular this year too, and I wonder how many bouquets I’ll see featuring these flowers in 2010 and 2011.  I love the delicate, vintage look of these flowers.

Another May wedding featured a blue bouquet full of delphinium, stephanotis, and lobelia.  And I loved these escort cards which also doubled as a sweet floral favor.

At Christine and Drew’s June wedding (the very end of spring!) at the Mansion at Farleigh Dickinson University, Christine carried a bouquet of light and dark pink roses, white and pink peonies and creamy white anemones.  Christine’s flowers were done by Beth Noonan of Sycamore Designs.

Christine’s centerpieces were cut roses and carnations, sweetly and delicately floating in a round vase.

Finally, I wanted to highlight this boutonniere with its miniature roses, accented by some unopend white freesia buds.  I love it when the groom wears pink!

I am LOVING that very first centerpiece with the postcard. I wasn’t sure what I wanted for centerpieces at my wedding, but I could definitely envision something like this.

Scenes from New York City – February 17-20

During the winter months I spend most of my time collaborating with other photographers, honing my craft, and meeting with new clients for consultations. Over the past few days, much of this work has been taking place in New York City. Every time I have a meeting in the city, I try to do some shooting while I’m there. A week ago, there was snow. Then, this weekend the skies cleared and I found myself looking up much of the time and shooting architectural images.

Often, when I’m toting my camera around with a load of other things, I choose just one lens for the entire day. It’s as much of a personal challenge to shoot at only one focal length as it is simply for practicality. Depending on the day, these photos were shot with either of my little Canon 50mm f1.4 or 28mm f1.8 lenses. Both are great small lenses for fun stuff like this!

The REAL Winter Wonderland – North Jersey Photography

When I woke up yesterday, this is what I saw.  You might be sick of hearing about it, but this former-Michigander still loves her a snow day.

A few interesting compositions out the window.

I overheard one of my friends call it “Slurpee Snow.”  Here’s proof in the way it stuck to the windows.

I don’t know if we got the 10 inches that Central Park seems to have reported.  I’d say it was around 6-8 inches.  This shot was taken at about 4 PM, after the majority of the snow had fallen.

Yep, I’m going to say (in my expert opinion, haha) that we only got about 6-8 inches in Rutherford, NJ.  But it sure was beautiful!

Later, Joe and I couldn’t help but take a walk through the bright reflected light at about 10 PM.  It’s quite eerie really, shooting at NIGHT in light that allows one to actually HAND-HOLD an iPhone and still get a clear picture.  (Yes, this was shot on my iPhone with no editing, but I still think it’s pretty cool.)

I just flew half way across the world to get my fill of a real Winter in this year. I so envy the snow you have there. Love all of these shots, I loooovve how you can see so creativity just around your own home. The shots from inside your place are gorgeous!

Wow! It seems like everyone but us is getting snow lately. Kind of weird. I guess it’s because I traded in the sports car for 4WD this winter? LOL.

Winter Wonderland – Part 2 – Kate and Linzi

Here’s Part Two of my Winter Wonderland shoot; minus the dreamy winter snow scenes.  I guess Washington D.C. kept all the snow for themselves last weekend!

Kate and Linzi braved the chilly temps and wind to model for Kyle and me.  We took quite a few warm-up breaks in the Chelsea Market nearby and did most of the shooting on the High Line and around 9th and 15th.

^^^ See all that snow on the ground in the photo above?^^^  Yep, that’s all we got in NYC on Saturday!

Linzi is a designer in her own right, and she made this amazing orange coat herself.

Linzi also designed the outfit that Kate is wearing.  I love fashion talent!

Great shots Sarah! I had a lot of fun hanging out and shooting. Looks like all the snow is coming this weekend, lol :)

Winter Wonderland – Part 1 – My friends!

As I sit here on the eve of what weather forecasters say will be an actual snowy day, I can’t help but laugh about the snowy shoot I planned for last Saturday that resulted in a complete lack of snow.  :)  I’ve also learned that the best way to keep in touch with one’s clients about major life milestones is to invite them to wear their wedding dress one more time.  I had more than one client announce that they might not fit into their dress for a while on account of pregnancy!  Quite exciting, I might add!  So, my last-minute Winter Wonderland shoot became a great time hanging out with my friends, a fellow wedding photographer, and a couple of models who were up for the challenge of spending some time out in the freezing cold.  Oh, and because everyone who RSVP’d lived in NYC, we moved the shoot to the High Line in Lower Manhattan.

First up, I wanted to share a few photos of my good friends Paula and Paula.  Yes, I have two friends named Paula!  Aren’t they lovely?

Complete sweethearts.  I love my friends!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! Paula (Paula with the blue coat), you are so New York! And this would be the perfect coat for the photo shoot we still need to do with your pups. Gorgeous work, Sarah. These ladies are both smiling from the inside and it takes someone great behind the camera to pull that out.
